Idolatry

Idolatry is warned against over and over again in God’s Word.  Learn what is it and why God commands against it.

Return to ME

God speaks in mental pictures. If you consider the relationship between a man and a woman as a similitude of the relationship between God and His people, you can understand how He feels when His woman gives her good stuff to another.  In many different places, God makes mention of Israel as His wife and He is as her husband.

In Ezekiel, chapter 23, Israel – the northern kingdom of Samaria is spoken of as Ahola and her sister Judah is as Aholibah.  First Ahola committed whoredoms with the Assyrians and she defiled herself with idols.  Hence; idolatry is equated with committing adultery against God.  When Aholibah /Judah saw this, she did more in her whoredoms than her sister.

Both of these sisters committed whoredoms in that they turned away from their husband and doted after other gods.  For this reason, their God gave them over to their lovers and their ways.  For this reason, they have been oppressed and given over to all manner of suffering.  But if they return to Him, He has promised to take them back.

They say, if a man put away his wife and she goes from him and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, says the Lord.

Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with.  In the ways you have sat for them as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your whoredoms and with your wickedness.

What is idolatry?

What exactly is idolatry?  This probably seems like an odd question.  In scripture, the subject of idolatry is one of the most covered topics.  The question, however, is not whether God commands against idolatry, which He most assuredly does, but what is it?  The argument has been made that when praying to an image or a statue, it is not idolatry as long as it’s done in reverence to the person or “saint” the image represents, and as long as you do it in the worship of and love for God.

In Ex 20 (the Ten Commandments) God commands against worshiping “graven images or any likeness” stating,

“You shall not bow down yourself to them, nor serve them” Exodus 20:5

God is so adamant about this that it takes three verses to cover this one commandment.  He refers to the idolaters as “them that hate Me.”

Do any of these men hate God?

Webster defines idolatry as “the worship of a physical object as a god.”  This is a very simple and concise definition, but it does not cover the full scope.  What about the worship of God through a physical object?  Does God appreciate your worship even if it comes through a statue or a painting or a “holy” wall or a big black box?  As long as you are worshiping God why does it matter how you do it?

Bishops – Pedophile Protectors, Promoted by Francis

Osorno, Chile

Pope Francis continues to lead a house of pedophiles with tolerance for the accused and disregard for the victims as was recently confirmed through his leadership promotions. A small town in southern Chile has come into the spotlight with the promotion of Juan Barros Madrid to the position of Bishop. Juan is not unique to the Catholic organization in that he has been accused of covering up the crimes of his mentor by destroying letters from victims. The victims also accuse Juan of being present in the room while they were sexually abused. If that is the case, he is also a participant in the crimes, a criminal himself. The confirmed abuser, Karadima, was found guilty by the Vatican and sentenced to a life of “penitence and prayer”.

“Bring Out Your Dead!” … Men’s Bones

Rome, Italy
The Catholic Church has gotten a lot of press this year with Francis’s more “modern” public relations campaign. While they have stepped up their attempts to relate to the technologically driven social media world, they maintain their long traditions of glorifying the dead, worshiping idols and perpetrating traditions that have NOTHING to do with God, but are against Him.

This week, the Church will put a spotlight on their pagan foundations by parading bones they “traditionally believe” to be those of Peter. This event will close the “Year of Faith” started by Ratzinger, who lost faith in his ability to be Pope back in February. The word Faith in the Catholic understanding is to “just believe” in something, for example that dead men’s bones are for “venerating”. Venerating bones is a direct violation of God’s Command against worshiping idols. To worship something is to “Give Worth”. Worshiping idols is commanded against from the beginning of God’s Word.
